What does a liver test measure?

liver test

A liver test measures various parameters that provide information about the condition of the liver.  Most liver tests provide information about the parameters bilirubin and urobilinogen. Bilirubin is a breakdown product of red blood color.  In liver dysfunction, bilirubin is increasingly excreted in the urine. It can also lead to a yellowing of the skin (jaundice).

As a degradation product of bilirubin, urobilinogen is also used as a parameter in liver tests.  In case of liver dysfunction or liver overload, urobilinogen is excreted in urine at a higher concentration. Thus, this parameter can provide evidence of liver damage in urine-based liver tests.

More liver values are usually determined in blood tests.  These include the enzyme GPT (ALT), which stands for glutamate pyruvate transaminase.  This value has a great significance for a possible liver damage.  Also relevant are the known liver enzymes GOT and the most well-known among the liver values, the gamma-GT or ggt, the “alcohol value”.  GGT stands for gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase, also an enzyme. Unlike GOT and GPT, GGT indicates a long-term damage to the liver, usually due to chronic alcohol abuse or at least permanently high alcohol consumption.

How is liver test used?

The use of rapid tests to study liver function is simple and easy to do even for the inexperienced.  In addition, there is a detailed instruction manual for the liver kits which you can use to orient yourself during the implementation of the test.

In principle, the procedure for a urine-based liver test is such that the test strip is dipped into the urine and then a waiting period of a few seconds must be observed.  During this time, the urine reacts with the analyses applied to the test strip and the test strip discolors.

Based on the color, you can now compare the colors of the test strip with the color specifications on the package leaflet to read the result of the liver test.
