What is a C-Reactive Protein Test (CRP test)?

A C-Reactive Protein Test (CRP test) is a rapid test for the determination of the concentration of the C-reactive protein in a blood sample.

C-Reactive Protein (CRP) is an acute phase protein, the concentration of which rapidly increases rapidly in the blood as a reaction of the immune system to bacterial infections.

In the case of virus-induced disease, on the other hand, the CRP value hardly increases.  Therefore, a CRP rapid test is a useful tool for a safe diagnosis and immediate start of therapy.

How does a C-Reactive Protein Test (CRP test) work?

The C-Reactive Protein Test (CRP test) is based on a biochemical reaction, the so-called antigen-antibody reaction.  The test membrane attached in the test cassette is coated with CRP antibodies arranged along the test line.  The antibodies are linked to a chromatographic (color-writing) marker.

Color Markers Become Visible

If the antigens from the blood sample bind to these antibodies, they are visible along the test line of the color markers.  The human eye perceives a colored line, the test line.  The result is determined according to the number and intensity of the line.  Such a test is also referred to as an immunoassay .

Detection Limits

The C-Reactive Protein Test (CRP rapid test) can be performed with whole blood, plasma or serum.  The rapid test shows concentrations of the C-reactive protein above 10 mg/l, the reference line being 30 mg/l.  What does that mean?  The detection limit, also called cut-off, is 10 mg/l.

If the blood sample contains less C-reatkives protein than defined in the detection limit, no colored line appears and the test result is negative.  If the sample contains CRP, but in a low concentration, a pale line appears.  In this case, the CRP concentration in the blood is between 10 and 30 mg/l.

If the sample has a CRP concentration of approximately 30 mg/l, the color intensity of the test line is approximately equal to the color intensity of the reference line.  If the color intensity of the test line is higher than that of the reference line, the CRP concentration in the sample is above 30 mg l.

In order to ensure that the CRP test has been performed correctly and has worked, a control line appears in the result field.  If this is missing, the test is invalid.

What are the components of the C-Reactive Protein Test (CRP Test)?

  • Pipette or capillary tubes (3.5 μl)

How is the C-reactive protein quick test used?

Please follow the package insert of your C-Reactive Protein Test (CRP test )to ensure a reliable test result.  In principle, the test sequence is approximately as follows:

  • Unpack the components of the test from the pack and allow them to warm to room temperature.
  • Get a blood test from the fingertip. Observe the hygiene regulations.
  • Place the indicated amount of reagent liquid in the tube and add the blood sample.
  • Close the reagent tube with the cap.
  • Mix the mixture of reagent and the blood sample.
  • Drop the specified amount of drops onto the test cartridge’s fill field.
  • Set the stopwatch to the specified time, about 5 minutes.
  • Read the test result.

How is the test result read and interpreted?

Read the test result by the number of colored lines that appear in the result field.  There appear zero to three lines .

Three lines:

If three equally colored lines appear, the blood sample contains a CRP concentration of approx. 30 mg/l.  If the test line is less intensely colored than the other two lines (reference line and control line), the sample contains between 10 and 30 mg/l CRP.

If the test line is more intense (stronger) than the other two lines, the CRP concentration in the blood sample is higher than 30 mg/l.

Two lines:

If two lines (reference line and control line) appear, the blood sample contains a CRP concentration of less than 10 mg/l because the cut-off limit of the test is 10 mg/l.  That is, the blood sample may contain CRP but only in very low concentration.

If two lines (reference line and test line) appear, the test is invalid.  Only when the control line is visible, the test is valid.

A line:

If only the control line appears, the test is invalid.  A reference line must always appear.  If only the reference line is visible, the test is also invalid.  Even if only the test line becomes visible, the test is invalid.

What does a positive result mean?

If the C-Reactive Protein Test (CRP test) shows a positive result, this can be interpreted as an indication of a bacterial infection.  Also, tissue damage and inflammation cause a sharp increase in CRP concentration in the blood.
